About Us

Elephant Care International (ECI) pioneers and shares innovative elephant veterinary care and welfare knowledge and practice to create a kinder, gentler, healthier world for elephants.

ECI safeguards elephants living in captivity and in the wild by providing healthcare and welfare services, educational training, and technical support information to elephant care professionals worldwide.

Founded in 2005 by Dr. Susan Mikota (DVM) and Hank Hammatt, our work is focused on:

Care:  We improve the health and welfare of elephants in captivity in Asian elephant range countries. Read more.

Conservation:  We support wild elephant conservation by mitigating disease transmission to the wild where captive and wild elephants interface, by serving on the IUCN Asian Elephant Specialist Group (AsESG), by supporting special conservation projects of other groups and organizations, and by providing free online conservation resourcesRead more.

Capacity-Building: We enhance the capcity of veterinarians and others who care for elephants through workshops, one-on-one training, online resources, and by providing technical support, equipment, and supplies. Read more.
